Went to the morning session of the Detroit Lions training camp today. I left right before they started doing the autographs at the end. I didn’t want anyone’s autograph except maybe Calvin Johnson’s and I didn’t feel like waiting around for just one.
WRs looked pretty good. Williams was pretty much phoning it in, at least to my inexperienced eye. He just didn’t seem to be going that extra step or reaching that extra inch for the ball like the other guys were doing. One fan was yelling “quit taking plays off, Roy” over and over. Williams let it get to him and ended up going over to the stands and jawing it out with the guy. A couple coaches came over and got Williams back to the line, and then a couple security dudes went up and escorted the fan out of the stands.
Johnson, Furrey and MacDonald all looked great. The roster shows Johnson two inches taller than Williams but seeing them side by side it sure looked like more than that. Hanson looked great, but I knew he would. His middle name should be “money”. RBs looked good, nothing earth shattering but OK in my view. I think the Lions have a long way to go to establish their running game. We’ll see.
In all, I had fun. The weather was perfect, everyone seemed in a festive mood, the Lions’ staff was very friendly and welcoming, and the team looked pretty good all things considered. Let’s hope they do better than 7-9 this year!
